LIGHT
Curatorial Rationale
The presented works are focused on the concept of light and its uses and influences. Light has many uses in the field of art as well as in real life, it helps convey the focus of artwork, and widens the perspective on viewing colors.
My idea to focus the exhibition on light and its symbolism was influenced by artists including Dan Flavin, Alphonse Mucha, Albrecht Dürer, Emmanuelle Moureaux, Charles Allan Gilbert, Franz Marc, as well as others such as Ben F Laposky and Plato. I chose the theme of light for my exhibition because I wanted to intrigue the audience and make them interact with the exhibits as well as think about the concepts which I presented. It became apparent that the importance of light needed to be presented as a coherent whole while preserving the individuality of the concepts for each piece. The best way of presenting the different uses of light to the viewer is through the use of varied techniques.
Firstly in the left corner, I arranged artworks which have a physical representation of light, those include Dream, Blinding Shadow and Street Lights. They represent light from a realistic point of view. The Blinding Shadow is a more conceptual artwork and Dream is an aesthetic artwork. The aestheticism is continued throughout the next section of the exhibition. Hare, Vanitas, Beauty and Raging Fire are all focused on the aesthetical point of light while each representing a slightly different related concept. Lastly, the two artworks on the right, Good and Evil and Jigsaw are mostly focused on forming an interaction with the audience. This arrangement of the exhibition helps the viewers experience the concept of light in all three forms separately but also as a whole.
Moreover, besides all of the projects having a representation of light, the concepts for all of the projects are all related to humans as well. Blinding Shadow, Good and Evil and Jigsaw all relate to human morality. Blinding shadow represents how humans are subject to manipulation by others, while Good and Evil and Jigsaw represent the diversity of thought, they relate to how each human is built of different pieces. Beauty, Flare Hare, and Raging Fire represent human emotions such as happiness, love, and hate. Lastly, Street Lights, Dream and Vanitas are all related to death. While Vanitas has a direct representation of the concept of the passing of time, Street Lights relates to waiting and Dream relates to the relief one has from daily life when we are asleep.
The audience loved the exhibition, the artworks which were the most appreciated were ones which required interaction such as Good and Evil and Jigsaw, although ones which use artificial light within the artwork also seemed to intrigue the viewers. Those include Blinding Shadow, Dream and Street Lights. Good and Evil had viewers pick up the colored acrylics and look through them to reveal the two hidden images. Furthermore, the Jigsaw had people move around the room to try to piece together the image of Frida Kahlo.
